Why it might be recommended

Every test is chosen to answer a specific question. These are the most common reasons for this one.

  1. Palpitations or fluttering that comes and goes
  2. Dizzy spells or fainting without a clear cause
  3. Checking how well rhythm treatment is working
  4. Looking for atrial fibrillation after a stroke or TIA

What happens

  1. Fitting

A few stickers go on your chest, connected to a recorder about the size of a phone, worn on a belt or around your neck.

  2. Everyday life

You go home and carry on: work, walking, sleeping. The recorder must stay dry.

  3. Symptom diary

Whenever you notice symptoms, you write down the time and what you felt, or press the event button if the device has one.

  4. Return and analysis

You return the recorder, and the full recording is analysed and compared with your diary.

How to prepare

  • Shower before your appointment; you cannot bathe or swim while wearing it
  • Wear loose clothing that fits comfortably over the recorder
  • Take your medicines as usual unless you are told otherwise

Common questions

Can I sleep with it on?

Yes. Keep it on through the night; your overnight rhythm is often important.

What if a sticker comes loose?

Press it back firmly. You will be shown how to replace one if needed.

What if I have no symptoms while wearing it?

The recording is still useful, because it shows your rhythm across day and night. If symptoms are rare, a longer monitor may be suggested.

Not sure this is the test you need?

You do not have to decide alone. Book a consultation or send a question on WhatsApp. Tests are chosen once your symptoms and history have been reviewed.

This page explains what the test involves. It is not medical advice for your situation. If you have sudden or severe chest pain, fainting or breathlessness, seek emergency care immediately.
